The Ramayana tells of the pastimes of Lord Rama, one of the ten principle avatars. An avatar is an expansion of Lord Krishna, appearing in this world. Avatars have individual moods in their pastimes. Lord Rama was in the mood of a perfect King. His father was obligated under a vow one of his wives to banish Rama from the kingdom for 14 years. With His loyal brother Laksman and His devoted wife Sita, Ram stayed at a beautiful forest abode called Panchavati until the powerful but evil king of the demons, Ravana, kidnapped Sita through a ploy. Hanuman and the warriors a monkey-like race joined with Rama and Laksman to find Sita at Lanka. Together they built a bridge to Lanka. Lord Rama ultimately defeated Ravana and rescued Sita, then returned to rule Ayodhya.
