Why does Lord Nrsimhadev change colour? In June there is a festival called Candan Yatra.. Devotees spend hours grinding sandalwood into a wet paste. The pujaris spread it over the body of the Lord daily for about two weeks. Sometimes they add colour the sandalwood paste. All of this is for the pleasure of the Lord.
Why does Lord Nrsimhadev look like a lion? The Supreme Lord appears in various forms to enjoy His pastimes in various moods. In this instance the atheist demon Hiranyakasipu achieved boons that he would never be killed by a man or an animal, never be killed in the day or night, on the land or sea or in the air, nor by any weapon, and so on. In this way he thought he would be immortal. When, out of anger and hatred for God, he tried to kill his son Prahlad because he would not give up his devotion to the Lord, Nrsimhadev appeared with terrifying, ferocious anger to kill him. His form was half-man, half-lion, which outsmarted the boons. He killed the demon at dusk (not day or night) with his nails (not any weapon) on His lap (not on the land sea or in the air). Devotees pray to Lord Krishna in the form of Lord Nrsimhadev for protection from danger and for protection from illusion (lust, anger, greed). They pray to Lord Nrsimhadev to kill their materialistic desires so they can experience pure bhakti or devotional love.
How does one pronounce “Nrsimhadev”? Sanskrit contains combined consonants. “d” plus “h” makes dh to start words such as “dharma.” In this case “n” plus “ri” make something like “n r i” -- which may feel awkward at first. So it's Nri simha dev. The m in Simha is actually something like ng as in Singapore. The N r i is derived from Nara (human). Nara + simha means half man half lion. One should not sing nasringadev which is incorrect. |
